These are the basic and essential equipment needed to start practicing kendo. Ensuring all equipment is properly sized and used correctly will help practitioners train safely and effectively.

Kendo requires specialized equipment to ensure safety and effectiveness in training and competition. Below is a list of essential kendo equipment:

Shinai (Bamboo Sword)

Shinai is the bamboo sword used in kendo. It is made from 4 bamboo slats bound together with leather and string.

Function: Used for training and competition, replacing real swords to ensure safety.

Bogu (Protective Armor)

Bogu is the protective equipment used in kendo, consisting of four main parts:

  • Men: Helmet protecting the head, face, and shoulders.
  • Kote: Gloves protecting the wrists and hands.
  • Do: Chest protector covering the torso and abdomen.
  • Tare: Waist protector covering the hips and thighs.

Function: Protects vital areas of the body during training and competition.

Hakama and Keikogi

  • Hakama: Wide-legged pleated pants with 7 folds symbolizing the virtues of a swordsman.
  • Keikogi: Training jacket, usually made of thick cotton to withstand impact and absorb sweat.

Function: Traditional and formal attire for kendo practice, allowing flexible and comfortable movement.

Bokuto (Wooden Sword)

Bokuto is a wooden sword used for practicing kata (forms) and techniques without using shinai.

Function: Used in kata exercises to simulate real sword techniques.

Tenugui (Cotton Towel)

A thin cotton towel worn under the men to absorb sweat and maintain hygiene.

Function: Protects the head, provides comfort when wearing men, and absorbs sweat.

Shinai and Bogu Bags

Specialized bags for carrying and storing shinai and bogu.

Function: Helps transport and store kendo equipment neatly and safely.
