Equipment to Prepare and Maintain

Shinai

During Kyu examinations, all Shinai must pass inspection to meet standards for use. The criteria include:

  • Tension of the Tsuru (string).
  • Bamboo surface for scratches, splinters, chips, or breaks that could affect fellow practitioners.
  • Correct position of the Nakayui (mono-uchi section).

Therefore, members must maintain their Shinai and ensure it meets standards for the examination or have a backup plan in case their Shinai is rejected during the exam.

Bogu

For Bogu, during examinations the binding strings must be neat, especially Kote Himo and Men Himo which need to be adjusted appropriately for each person.

  • Men Himo length after tying should be 30cm from the knot.
  • Kote Himo must be tied neatly without strings protruding.

Notes During Examination

  • Arrive on time to clean the venue and prepare equipment properly.
  • Comply with organizer regulations and maintain order throughout the examination.
  • Besides Kendo equipment (Shinai, Kendogi, Hakama), personal items are not allowed in the examination area.
  • Do not wear protective gear during the examination. If injury requires protective gear, please inform the examination organizer in advance.
